Powering Financial Independence for Artists: Amuse Partners with Trolley

Independence has always been at the heart of Amuse.

Since launching as an artist-first digital music distribution platform, Amuse offers a modern alternative to traditional record labels, enabling creators to release music globally, on their own terms, while retaining ownership and control of their careers. By operating both an open DIY platform and more hands-on Artist & Label Services for a curated selection of artists and teams, Amuse supports musicians, teams, and labels of all sizes to not only start independent careers, but stay independent.

As Amuse reimagined its DIY artist plans and expanded its product offering, one challenge became increasingly clear: supporting independence at scale requires modern, flexible payout infrastructure. As payout and recipient operations grew in scope, key workflows like managing royalties, paying collaborators, and handling tax compliance became more complex.

Through its partnership with Trolley, Amuse is modernizing payouts and financial operations, giving artists and teams the autonomy, reliability, and simplicity they need to thrive.

Designing for independence at every stage

Launched in 2017, Amuse is home to hundreds of thousands of independent artists, billion-stream songs, and tastemaking international talent like Yot Club, Emei, Deki Alem, and Stela Cole.

At the core of Amuse’s approach is a commitment to supporting artists, teams, and labels as their needs evolve, while preserving their autonomy:

“We strongly believe that we can support artists, teams, and labels at all stages of their journey, through a powerful set of tools and services. Redesigning our plans was a way to build more flexibility and options into our product according to differing needs, and ultimately allows independent artists to stay in control of their career, from bedroom to breakthrough.” — Paul Griffiths, Head of Commercial Development, Amuse

But flexibility in product offerings also demands flexibility behind the scenes. As artists grow, so do their financial workflows: collaborators, royalty splits, business entities, international payouts, and tax obligations all add layers of complexity.

Amuse needed payout infrastructure that could scale alongside its users, without undermining the simplicity artists expect.

Empowering artists with financial autonomy

At the core of independence is financial control. For Amuse, payouts are a matter of trust. They shape how artists experience the platform long after their music is released, and signal whether the system behind the scenes is one artists can rely on.

Looking ahead, Paul sees this focus on payout and recipient operations as foundational to the future of independent music businesses: “It empowers independent teams with the financial autonomy they need to thrive in today’s industry. By streamlining and simplifying financial routines, independent businesses can operate more efficiently and spend more time on the creative work that matters most.”

With Trolley in place, Amuse can put that vision into practice, supporting royalty flows that ease the burden on internal teams and enable artists to focus on their craft.

Removing friction from payout and tax operations

Royalty distribution has long been a pain point across the music industry. Amuse was an early innovator, becoming one of the first services to build data-driven royalty advances for DIY artists and to let artists seamlessly split royalties with collaborators directly from its apps.

Partnering with Trolley marked the next logical step in removing administrative headaches for customers—especially when it came to tax compliance.

With Trolley, Amuse can automate tax information collection and validation for recipients, supporting both US and international requirements as its artist base continues to grow. This includes onboarding artists and collaborators with the appropriate W‑9 or W‑8 forms, validating taxpayer information, and tracking payout totals needed for year‑end reporting.

By bringing these workflows into a single system, Amuse reduces manual tax work and last‑minute cleanup during filing season, while artists receive clearer requests, fewer follow‑ups, and a smoother path through tax reporting.

A seamless payout experience, built directly into the Amuse app

When evaluating payout partners, Amuse had one non-negotiable requirement: the payout experience needed to feel native within its apps, not bolted on or redirected elsewhere.

To achieve that, Amuse needed a partner that could support deep, flexible integrations while maintaining a simple experience for artists. Trolley’s APIs and hands-on development support made it possible to embed payouts directly into the Amuse product, giving the team confidence that the solution could meet both technical requirements and long-term product goals.

The result is a payout experience that feels like a natural extension of the Amuse platform—one that supports artists and teams without pulling them into disconnected systems or manual workflows.

Scaling independence without adding complexity

By integrating Trolley, Amuse is strengthening the financial foundation that underpins its entire product strategy. Artists can collaborate freely, grow their teams, and professionalize their operations, without losing the independence that drew them to Amuse in the first place.

This partnership allows Amuse to scale globally, support more complex payout scenarios, and meet evolving compliance requirements, all while staying true to its core mission.

“Amuse’s continued commitment to independent artists really stands out,” said Conor Cox, VP Revenue at Trolley. “We’re proud to partner with them to power payouts and tax compliance in a way that enhances the experience for artists at every step.”

As the independent music economy continues to grow, Amuse and Trolley are helping ensure that creators don’t just release music on their own terms; they get paid that way, too.
